Teatro alla Scala (or La Scala, as it is known), in Milan, Italy, is one of the most famousopera houses in the world. Theatre was inaugurated on August 3, 1778, under the nameNuovo Regio Ducal Teatro alla Scala with Antonio Salieri's work riconosciuta Europa.La Scala season traditionally opens every December 7, Saint Ambrose's Day, the anniversary of the patron saint of Milan. All performances must end before midnight;long operas start earlier in the afternoon if necessary. Ticket holders are not allowed toenter until the show begins.
La Scala Museum (Museo Teatrale alla Scala), accessible from the foyer of the theaterand part of the building, has a collection of paintings, drafts, sculptures, costumes, andother documents relating to the opera and the history of La Scala.
La Scala also has the Accademia d'Arti e Mestieri dello Spettacolo (Academy for thePerforming Arts.) The goal is to train a new generation of young musicians, technicalstaff, and dancers (at the Scuola del Teatro alla Scala Ballo, a division of The Academy).
